The Galaxy Z Fold 2
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 features a large cover display, improved design and innovative Flex mode, making it the best foldable phone on the market today.
Foldable phones have been met with much scepticism and inspired a lot of memes when first released. But they have come a long way since then. Samsung’s first-generation foldable phone was delayed due to consistency issues and released with compromised features. The Fold 2, on the other hand, feels like a ruggedly solid device, a true “all-screen” experience for the user.
However, folding phones are still a premium experience, and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 comes with an astronomical price tag, costing £1,799 for a 256GB model. There is no sign of Samsung offering other storage variants at this time, which means there are no affordable alternatives coming soon. The release date for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is the 18th of September targeting the US and UK markets specifically.
Let’s dive into the specifications to see if the foldable phone experience can lure us into taking out our wallets.
Elite foldable design and display
Though the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is still inward-folding, Samsung has massively increased the screen size, to 6.2 inches. The Fold 2 is slightly heavier than the original Fold, but the extra heft lends a high-quality feeling when you hold it. It’s also a bit thinner than the original Fold.
Samsung has integrated a fingerprint sensor into the power button that sits on the right side of the device when folded. This means the volume button is placed slightly lower on this side, making it easier to reach.
You’ll notice a big difference when opening and closing the Fold 2 – it makes the original Fold’s mechanism feel ancient by comparison. The Galaxy Fold 2 supports three states: folded, half-folded, and a position anywhere between 75 to 115 degrees. In the Z Flip, you now have brushes inside the hinge to keep dust and debris at bay. Innovation at its best!
Heavy-duty processor means a seamless gaming experience
The phone’s underlying Snapdragon 865+ processor and 12GB RAM don’t have any problems keeping up with demanding mobile games like PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty: Mobile and Asphalt 9: Legends. What’s more impressive is how well it can play games while also allowing you to browse the web and watch YouTube videos at the same time.
Our only point of concern is the storage, which is fixed at 256GB without any microSD expansion.
Flexible camera system
The Fold 2 has three cameras in the top-left and rear of the body. The primary camera has a f/1.8 aperture and supports dual-pixel focusing, which should make it fast and responsive even in low light. The telephoto camera can zoom in 2x optical or 10x hybrid, while the ultra-wide snapper lets you get creative with landscapes and other similar shots.
When the phone is folded, you can use the primary camera in conjunction with the front screen to shoot selfies like you would with any other phone. When the phone is unfolded, you can select a model that uses both the main and front screens, meaning that both photographer and subject can see how the photo is framed.
Superior battery life
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 comes with an impressive 4,500mAh battery, enough to go through an entire day with half its capacity remaining. That’s after streaming videos, checking social media, browsing the web randomly and playing mobile games.
Furthermore, Samsung managed to squeeze fast charging into the Fold 2. With the 25W charger, 30 minutes of charging time gives you 46% of your battery capacity and an hour of plug-in time brings the capacity up to 86%.
