Our Take On The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus

While the smartphone industry is abuzz with the impending release of the Galaxy 10 from Samsung, we decided to take a look at the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, one of the best Android smartphones you can get your hands on. There is much to love about the Galaxy 9 Plus, including the impressive AMOLED screen and powerful specifications.

Design

The first thing you will notice about the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is its design. Samsung sticks with the metal and glass body, and it continues to be a sublime look. The metal body, glass casing and curved edges make the Galaxy 9 Plus one of the best-looking smartphones on the market. However, the design is more than just looks – the 9 Plus features an IP-68 rating, meaning it is dust and water resistant. While this is not a smartphone you can take to the shower, it can certainly stand up to a rainstorm. Beyond the damage-resistant properties, the Samsung Galaxy 9 Plus is an improvement over its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy 8 Plus.

The position of the fingerprint scanner has been readjusted, it is now at the centre, just beneath the camera, and well within the range of your fingers. Overall, the design lends a high-end look that we expect from the leading Android smartphone in the market.

Display

The display is easily the most impressive part of the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, measuring an impressive 6.2” inches with an aspect ratio of 18.5:9, the HD SuperAMOLED screen is an end-to-end display covering the entire smartphone surface, replacing the bezels with extended curved edges. The size of the screen is impressive, but when combined with the 1080p resolution, high contrast and vibrant colours, it becomes a marquee feature that sets a new standard for smartphones. Whether you are watching movies or simply looking up Google maps, the screen displays everything with high resolution and crisp colours.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus delivers some of the brightest pictures you have ever seen from a smartphone. The main point focal point is the dual aperture lens, where the camera can switch between aperture f1.5 (the first for a smartphone camera), and an f2.4. This means that the 9 Plus captures high-quality images, even in the dimmest areas. Furthermore, the images do not come with the noise usually associated with artificial brightness added by the smartphone. Along with the camera, comes an accessible and intuitive camera app – access different modes by swiping from the right and left, trigger the selfie camera with an open-handed gesture, and launch the app by double pressing the sleep/wake button.

Speakers

Speakers represent a significant improvement over the S8 Plus. The S9 Plus comes with dual speaker system, which delivers 40% more sound than the S8 Plus that has a single speaker system. The speakers are further refined by AKG to deliver a sound that is not just louder, but crisper and more detailed than before. Not only is there an improvement in sound quality, we see an improvement in functionality.

Previous Galaxy smartphones came with bottom-firing speakers. If you held the smartphone in landscape mode, you would accidentally mute the speaker. However, the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus does away with this problem due to its stereo speaker. The smartphones come with Dolby Atmos support, which simulates 360-degree surround sound.

Battery Life

The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus features a 3500 mAh battery, it’s not a significant increase over the power capacity over the S8 Plus, which is somewhat expected. Samsung has been a little hesitant to push the boundaries of battery capacity, given what happened with the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. However, while capacity has not changed, charging time has improved significantly. It only takes 1hr and 41 minutes to charge the battery from zero to 100 per cent. The Galaxy S9 Plus supports wireless charging with Qi wireless charging pads. While there is an improvement in charging time, battery lifespan is relatively the same.

Key takeaways

The industry may be abuzz with the Samsung Galaxy 10, the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is still a top of the line smartphone with the best display and camera tech in the market. If you are looking for a better smartphone, better images or a better screen from which to watch your favourite movies, the S9 Plus is perfect for you.
