A look at the OnePlus 7 vs OnePlus 7 Pro.

OnePlus 7 vs. OnePlus 7 Pro

Though both smartphones are not out yet (the expected launch date is May 14th, 2019), everyone is waiting for the next edition in the OnePlus flagship series, the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro. OnePlus 6 was an excellent smartphone and proved to be quite successful. Therefore, the pressure is high for the 7 to deliver. Specifications for the brand new smartphones have been leaked and we are taking full advantage of the opportunity to compare both smartphones to see which one offers the better deal to you.

Comparison OnePlus 7 vs OnePlus 7 Pro

Design Specs

Any smartphone with the word ‘Pro’ in the title is going to offer a slightly bigger design and that’s what you see here. The OnePlus 7 Pro has a bigger body, noticeable enough to the naked eye. With a height of 162.6mm, the Oneplus 7 Pro has a slight edge over the OnePlus 7 which stands at 157.7mm. The 7 Pro is also slightly wider and thicker, measuring at 76mm and 8.8mm compared to the OnePlus 7’s 74.8mm and 8.1mm. Overall, if you are looking at it from a size standpoint, the OnePlus 7 Pro wins this round. While we don’t think size is everything, for those who feel that a bigger smartphone means more value, then the Pro will be the better choice for you.

Camera

Now we come to the camera – one of the most important features we are keeping an eye on and the 7 Pro wins this round as well. Both smartphones come with a 48MP front camera, which is a great win for both smartphones. The images are going to be stunning. However, while the OnePlus 7 has one extra 5MP camera, the 7 Pro has two additional cameras with 16MP and 8MP resolution. Therefore, if you want a smartphone that delivers a better resolution, then you are going to have to take the 7 Pro.

Battery

Fantastic camera and awesome specs don’t mean much without a long battery life and here is one area where the OnePlus 7 has the 7 Pro beat. The OnePlus 7 has a bigger battery capacity with 4150mAH, while the 7 Pro only has a 4000mAH. The battery capacity may not seem like a huge deal now, but when you are watching videos, taking images and playing games, the OnePlus 7’s bigger battery capacity will present a considerable advantage over the Pro’s.

Display

When it comes to the display, both the OnePlus 7 and the 7 Pro have similar specs. Both smartphones feature a Super AMOLED display for crisp detail and vibrant colours. Videos, images and games are going to look fantastic on both smartphones. Furthermore, both smartphones have the same screen to body ratio of 19.5:9. But that’s where the similarity ends. In terms of size, the 7 Pro offers a bigger screen with 6.64 inches compared to 6.2 inches. In addition to a larger screen, the 7 Pro has a higher screen resolution of 1440 x 3120 pixels compared to 1080 x 2340 pixels from the OnePlus 7. The Pro has a higher 518ppi compared to 416ppi.

Overall, we give the edge to the 7 Pro, but we don’t think it’s going to make a big difference in the long run.

Performance

In terms of performance, both smartphones are almost equal in make. Both phones have the same chipset, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. They both have the same octa-core processor, so you are not going to see a huge difference in that area. However, RAM speed is where we are not so sure. The OnePlus 7 is said to be 6GB RAM, but leaks indicate that the 7 Pro will feature different models with varying RAM speeds of 8GB and 10GB. RAM pretty much determines how fast and responsive a smartphone is, so here is where you will feel the difference. Overall, we give the advantage to the OnePlus 7 Pro. The 7 Pro is also said to be 5G compatible, which means faster and more stable mobile network connectivity. Overall, we give the performance advantage to the 7 Pro.

However, there is one advantage the OnePlus 7 has over the Pro, and that’s splash damage. Put simply, the OnePlus 7 is protected against splash damage, while the OnePlus 7 Pro is not. If you like the occasional outdoor adventure, then the OnePlus 7 might be the smarter choice

Key takeaways

Overall, the differences between the OnePlus 7 Pro and the OnePlus 7 are what we expected. There isn’t a massive difference between the two in terms of design and capabilities to the point where one feels cheaper than the other, but the variation is noticeable enough to justify a price difference. Having said that, we don’t recommend the OnePlus 7 Pro for everyone.

If you are passionate about tech and small incremental differences are important to you, then go for the Pro. However, if you have been using a mid-grade or flagship killer smartphone, like OnePlus phones are typically categorised as, and you want to upgrade, then the OnePlus 7 will be an excellent choice for you.
