Smartphones are like computers. When you use a new smartphone, it is intuitive and responsive, almost like it’s responding to your thoughts rather than your fingers. However, as it becomes loaded with apps, videos, images and more, the smartphone begins to slow down. As it slows down, the smartphone is no longer as intuitive or responsive, it begins to feel clunky, and using it becomes a frustrating experience. Sadly, no smartphone is immune to this. Whether it is a budget smartphone or a high-end phone, we all experience some level of slow down. Fortunately, there are ways to improve smartphone performance.
If you notice a drop in performance, clearing unnecessary apps from your phone can improve smartphone performance. Of course, you cannot just delete apps at random. You need to target the ones that are unnecessary or take up a lot of space. iOS users should go to Settings → General → Storage & iCloud Usage → Manage Storage. Here, you will get a list of all installed apps and how much space it takes up, along with the option to delete these apps. If you are using an Android phone, you should go to Settings → Storage → Apps. You will find a list of apps, along with their file size. Delete the apps that consume the most memory, and you will see a marked improvement in performance.
Widgets are extensions of applications and having too many has a detrimental impact on performance. Unlike apps, which can be activated and deactivated to improve memory performance, widgets are constantly using memory because they cannot be turned off. Furthermore, some widgets are not as useful as others, and it makes no sense to clog your memory with several widgets that are of little value. Therefore, one option is to keep fewer widgets by deleting unnecessary ones to reduce memory strain and improve smartphone performance.
Turning off animations speeds up performance. Animations refer to the minute movements like sliding screens, zoom, parallax and more. These animations enhance user experience but can slow down performance. To turn off animations, go to Settings, then to Developer Options, and select the option to turn off animations. The absence of extra movement will improve smartphone performance.
The best way to improve smartphone performance is to wipe the phone clean. Wiping the smartphone improves functionality and performance. To wipe an Android smartphone clean, go to Settings → Backup & Reset → Factory Data Reset. On an iPhone, go to Settings → General → Reset → Erase all Content and Settings. Before wiping the phone clean, it is best to back up your essential files and apps on iCloud or Google Drive.
Some apps use your location as part of their services. If you have too many apps stored on your phone, it will affect performance. Therefore, limiting the number of apps that use location services improves performance. To know which apps use your location go to Settings → Privacy → Location Services. You will know which apps have permission to access your location and which don’t. Disable the unnecessary apps to see an uptick in smartphone performance.
Smartphones are just like computers and will eventually slow down. Therefore, you should take time to clean up your smartphone and make sure performance does not drop. There are several ways to improve smartphone performance, but we have listed six techniques because they are simple yet extremely effective.
